DIAMOND REEF
This is a fun and easy dive,
suitable for all levels of expertise, and photographers who love macro lenses.
Leaving
the chain we head to the west.
Immediately, at a depth of 25 meters, we find
an interesting wall rich in red coral (Corallium rubrum), where it is common
to meet a few spiny lobsters. In reality, the wall actually consists of reefs
that are part of a large slide that is characteristic of the seabed from Punta
Fregante all the way to Testa del Leone.
This slide begins a few meters below the surface and continues to approximately
35 meters. Following it westward, we immerse ourselves in shining our flashlights
into the recesses, holes, indentations, and small caves to discover the diverse
world that inhabits them: moray eels, forkbeards, octopuses, squat lobsters,
crab, groupers and many more. Don't forget to glance out into the blue once
in a while to catch a glimpse of the inevitable sea breams found on this dive.
We then return up to a depth of about 15/10 meters to retrace our path to the
east, keeping the promontory wall to our left.
Schools of dassies and salps will be a constant presence throughout our return,
along with numerous groupers of all sizes.
